Susan Clearman
Organist
404-321-3854
Susan Clearman excitedly began piano lessons in Cocoa Beach, Florida at age 7, and was soon accompanying hymns for her parents' Methodist Sunday School. She took up accordion for fun, added organ studies, and by her early teens was substituting and playing for weddings. Then, Susan was off to Tallahassee, where she earned her bachelors in music composition (under Dr. John Boda) and a certificate in piano performance (under Leonard Mastrogiacomo), as well as continuing organ studies at Florida State University.
There followed an adventurous 25 years in Atlanta as a church organist [Methodist, Presbyterian & Episcopalian], and freelance pianist, accordionist and band leader. In addition to area concerts, musical theater, folk fests, wedding and convention engagements, she has performed in Scotland, Ireland, Israel, Bolivia, and across North America. Between 2004-2007 she studied music orchestration on sabbatical in Boston, MA. After four years composing commissioned works and performing in the mountains of Highlands, NC, Susan returned to the Atlanta area where she is very pleased to have joined the music ministry of Briarcliff UnitedMethodist Church in November of 2011.
Susan and her life partner of 25 years, Rev. Mary Wetzel, make their home in Lilburn with their polydactyl 20-year-old kitty, Toesy.
